When you introduce yourself at networking events, you don't want to do a five-minute monologue about yourself because that would give people the wrong impression.
To make the best impression on those you meet, focus on them.
When making introductions as part of casual conversations and mingling, be prepared to introduce yourself by simply stating your name and the name of your organization. Use the other person's name when you know it because he or she was introduced first or because he or she is wearing a nametag. Shaking hands is typically a polite gesture and when doing so, make sure to give a firm handshake, make eye contact, and smile.
What do you do? It is the low-hanging fruit question that is often tossed around networking events, so be prepared to answer this question and demonstrate your value.
You always want to be prepared to briefly respond to this question, either as part of a one-on-one conversation or as part of your introduction to a larger group.
In these situations, it's important to share a brief description of what you do, in a memorable way. For example,
"My name is Dana Hughes. I'm a relationship manager with XYZ National Company. I help business executives plan for their future- and their company's future."
"My name is Chris Upton with XZY National Company. I help business owners spend more time doing the things that make them successful at what they do."
The goal of your intriguing introduction is to cause the other person to say, "Tell me more..."
